15 Songs for the Dog Days of Summer 2017

Am I the only person not tired of hearing Despacito yet? Yeah, I didn’t think so. It really is the jam this summer. But you wanna know the coolest part of the song for me? I, at one point in my life, was pretty good friends with Luis Fonsi.

And I’ve got a really good story about it…

Back in the summer of 1997, I was in the Florida State University Singers. We took a trip to England for a countrywide tour for about a month. Once we got to London, we had a day or two of downtime. My group decided to visit London’s equivalent of Times Square and of course Virgin Megastore (remember them? lol!)

As I walked in, the first thing I noticed was a huge sign that read “Michael Jackson. Live at Wembley Stadium. 3 Nights.” I couldn’t believe it.  What are the odds that the one day I had free in London was the only show that wasn’t already sold out?! I was going to see Michael Jackson live on stage. I quickly began spreading the word to my friends, only to find one person that wanted to go with me, Luis Fonsi.

That’s right… Luis Fonsi and I took the Underground all the way across town and stood in line for almost six hours to see Michael Jackson with 120,000 other fans. Musically speaking, it is one of the highlights of my life. I was able to see one of my all-time favorites with someone who now has a #1 hit record! So yes… Please keep playing Despacito! And if you see Fonsi, tell him I said hi!

Side note: The opening act was the Backstreet Boys. I clearly remember thinking, “This is terrible. How did they get booked for this?” Well, I’ve been wrong before.

Side note #2: Later that summer, while hanging with Fonsi and Joel (who went to Dr. Phillips High School), their buddy Joey came over and played a new CD about to be released here in the states. I clearly remember thinking, “This is terrible. How did they get a deal?” It was Joey Fatone of NSync. Well, I’ve been wrong before.

Now on to the playlist…

Check out of some of my favorites from this summer and few that might be on the rise for the coming season.
